Florian Wirtz will be unavailable for Liverpool’s upcoming Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven. The playmaker missed a training session, raising concerns about his potential return from a muscle injury sustained while on international duty.

Injury Updates on Liverpool Squad

Wirtz is among four players sidelined due to injuries. He was the only one considered close to a return, yet his absence from the lunchtime training session suggests otherwise. The rest of the injured players include:

  • Conor Bradley
  • Jeremie Frimpong

Both defenders may need at least two more weeks for rehabilitation, presenting issues for head coach Arne Slot as he formulates his defensive strategy.

Midfield Challenges

During the recent 30 defeat to Nottingham Forest, midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones stepped in to fill gaps left by the injuries. This poor performance has prompted discussions about starting Joe Gomez, a player mainly utilized as a centreback but capable of playing on the right flank.

Gomez has had limited game time, having played a full match only twice since last December. His return to form has faced delays due to an injury sustained in an FA Cup loss earlier this year.

Liverpool’s Recent Form and Champions League Standing

In their last 11 matches across all competitions, Liverpool has endured eight losses and secured only three wins. Notably, two of those victories were in the Champions League, achieved against Eintracht Frankfurt and Real Madrid.

As Liverpool prepares for this week’s European fixtures, they currently rank eighth in the Champions League table. With 3 points separating them from the top position held by Bayern Munich, each match becomes essential for securing automatic qualification for the knockout stage.
