NV Energy is enhancing its wildfire detection systems by deploying 53 new cameras across Nevada. This initiative is part of the “Power Safe NV” program, designed to monitor and respond to potential fires effectively.
Details of the New Wildfire Detection Cameras
According to Jesse Murray, the senior vice president of energy delivery at NV Energy, the company’s expansive service area spans over 45,000 square miles. This vast territory poses challenges for monitoring fires, particularly in remote locations with few inhabitants. Murray emphasized the importance of early fire detection, stating, “We want to be able to see fires as soon as they start.”
Camera Distribution Across Nevada
The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has sanctioned the installation of these cameras. The distribution of the cameras is as follows:
- 35 cameras in northern Nevada
- 15 cameras in southern Nevada
Optimal Camera Placement
Murray explained that the placement of the cameras is strategic. Officials target mountain peaks and the tops of buildings for optimal visibility. These locations allow for a 360degree view and boast longrange capabilities. This positioning is crucial for effective fire monitoring.
As wildfires pose a significant threat to safety and environment, NV Energy’s proactive measures through the new camera installations aim to enhance fire detection and prevention efforts across the state.
