A former television host faces serious allegations of inappropriate conduct involving a minor. Peter Everett, known for his role on Network Ten’s cooking show, Ready Steady Cook, has been charged with sexual touching of a 16yearold boy on July 25 on the New South Wales (NSW) Central Coast.

Details of the Allegations

The allegations against Everett, now 67, describe him luring the teenager, who has highfunctioning autism, into his backyard. Court documents indicate that the boy was biking to get his bicycle repaired when Everett invited him back, promising a gift.

Incident Description

  • After returning, the teenager was invited into Everett’s garden.
  • Everett allegedly closed the garden gate and showed the boy a bag of cologne.
  • Claims also include Everett sniffing the boy’s arm and making him uncomfortable.
  • The accused allegedly squeezed the boy’s chest and made unwanted physical contact.
  • The teenager tried to push Everett’s hand away and felt pressured as the situation escalated.

According to reports, Everett not only expressed inappropriate physical affection but also engaged in kissing and licked the boy’s ear, which prompted the teenager to pull away. After experiencing discomfort, the boy managed to leave and informed his father about the incident, leading to police involvement.

Legal Proceedings

On July 26, after the allegations were reported, authorities arrested Everett at his home. He admitted to some physical contact but denied more serious claims such as squeezing the victim’s chest and licking his ear. He described his actions as having had “too long” of a hug.

Initially granted bail, Everett was required to maintain a distance of 800 meters from the complainant’s residence and report to police twice weekly. However, in a recent court hearing, he successfully petitioned to reduce these restrictions to allow him to conduct work close to the teenager’s home, now able to approach within 10 meters.

Court’s Consideration

During the proceedings, Justice Desmond Fagan expressed understanding towards preventing contact between Everett and the victim. However, he concluded that with specific conditions, there was no significant risk of reencountering the complainant. The court also permitted Everett to retrieve his passport for medical treatment in Bali.

Fagan described the alleged incident as serious but less severe than other similar crimes. The court emphasized that the offence did not involve extreme violence or ongoing pursuit. Everett is scheduled to appear in Local Court next June for further proceedings.
