October 15 marks six months since the outbreak of the tragic and senseless conflict in Suda
Sudan is suffering a mounting displacement crisis and significant further deterioration in the humanitarian situation.
More than 5.8 million civilians have been forced to flee their homes since April 15, including more than 1.1 million who have fled to neighboring countries. Humanitarian actors are bravely responding, but they are struggling to reach those in need because of intense fighting and impediments imposed by SAF and RSF. The United States remains the largest humanitarian donor to Sudan and we will continue our support for vulnerable populations in the country and those forced to flee due to the conflict.
The United States has been clear that the SAF and RSF must immediately stop the fighting and consistent with their commitments under the May 11 Jeddah Declaration of Principles to Protect the Civilians of Sudan allow unhindered humanitarian access, protect civilians and their human rights, and comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law. In the context of a negotiated exit from the conflict, Sudan’s democratic transition must be restored with the transfer of power to a civilian transitional government. As we acknowledge another somber milestone in the Sudan conflict, we reiterate our support for the Sudanese people and their aspirations for freedom, peace and justice.
