British Columbia’s south coast is preparing for a significant weather event, with storm warnings in place. Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for the North Shore of Metro Vancouver and Howe Sound. Expected precipitation could reach up to 70 millimeters in these areas.
Weather Forecasts and Warnings
As the storm approaches, Environment Canada has also warned of strong winds. Eastern parts of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley could experience winds up to 80 km/h. Gusts may reach 90 km/h near Hope and in Greater Victoria.
Mountainous Areas Facing Heavy Snow
The mountainous regions located north and east of Metro Vancouver are anticipating heavy snowfall. Weather warnings predict:
- 15 centimeters of snow in the Whistler and Pemberton areas
- Up to 40 centimeters of snow on the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt
This latest storm follows recent severe weather in the region. A powerful windstorm just days ago left thousands without power. At its peak, 120,000 customers in southern B.C. were affected. Thankfully, BC Hydro has made significant progress, restoring service to the majority of customers by this morning.
Wind and Rain Statistics
Recent observations report that wind gusts peaked at Race Rock, south of Vancouver Island, reaching 119 km/h. Additionally, Coquitlam recorded more than 70 millimeters of rainfall, marking one of the highest totals during this storm cycle.
As residents brace for the incoming rain and snow, preparedness is essential. Local authorities urge the public to stay safe and informed as the weather develops.
